Tips for Protecting Our Waters While Enjoying Fishing
The perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family is here. By being mindful of our waters, we can ensure that fishing and boating remain enjoyable for generations to come! Here are some tips to keep in mind while fishing to protect our water and wildlife.
Remove visible aquatic plants, animals, and mud from all equipment before leaving the water. This includes hulls, interiors, and motors.
Empty motors, bilges, livewells, and any equipment holding water before departing from the water site.
Ensure everything is thoroughly dry for five days OR use a towel to clean it.
Dispose of unwanted bait, fish remains, and packaging materials in the trash. Do not release live fish or other organisms from one water body to another.

Obey Speed Regulations and Respect Wildlife
We kindly ask that you obey all posted signs and markers regarding speeds and restoration areas. Boats should be cautious not to run into black rubber dredge pipes along the edges of the waterway. These are permitted parts of the restoration project. Pipe locations are checked daily. They are designed to be either submerged or marked with buoys to aid navigation.
Posted Signs Mean:
Idle speed – no wake
Slow Speed – boat off plane, minimal wake
Additionally, please be on the lookout and respect the wildlife and marine life. Practice passive observation to enhance your experience without disturbing the ecosystem.
Importance of Environmental Awareness
It’s crucial for all of us to recognize our shared responsibility in protecting our natural resources. Our actions directly influence the health of aquatic ecosystems. By following these guidelines, we contribute to the preservation of our beautiful waters.
Family Fun and Conservation
Spending time outdoors with family and friends creates lasting memories. Incorporating conservation practices into your boating and fishing activities will not only enhance your experience but will also teach younger generations the importance of caring for the environment.
Use this time in nature to educate kids about local fish species, wildlife habitats, and the significance of keeping our waterways clean. Share stories of the wonderful experiences you’ve had while fishing or boating. This knowledge fosters respect and understanding of our environment.
Staying Safe on the Water
Safety is paramount, especially during busy seasons. Here are some additional tips to ensure a safe outing:
Always wear life jackets. Even if you are an experienced swimmer, accidents can happen.
Keep a first aid kit on board. Be prepared for minor injuries that could occur.
Make sure your boat is equipped with all necessary safety equipment. This includes flares, fire extinguishers, and sound signaling devices.
Inform someone about your whereabouts. Share your itinerary with a friend or family member before heading out.
As we navigate our expeditions this week and throughout summer, we want to ensure the safety of everyone. Enjoy every moment, whether fishing, swimming, or simply relaxing by the water.
